Mercy Received, Mercy Given
SEPTEMBER 13 TO 19, 2026 · PROPER 19
“Should you not have had mercy on your fellow slave, as I had mercy on you?” Matthew 18:33
A Devotion to Begin the Week
Joseph had every reason to repay his brothers for the pit and the slave traders, yet when they knelt before him he wept and spoke kindly to them. Genesis 50 gives us one of the most astonishing sentences in Scripture: you intended to do harm to me, but God intended it for good. Sunday’s Gospel presses the same truth into a parable. A servant forgiven an unpayable debt seizes a fellow servant over pocket change, and the king is grieved, not because the man broke a rule but because mercy failed to change him. Forgiveness in the household of God is never a transaction we perform; it is a current we stand in. We forgive because we have been forgiven, and when we refuse, we dam the very stream that carried us home. This week your household will live near that stream. Someone will leave a mess, break a promise, or speak sharply before breakfast, and each small offense becomes a rehearsal space for the great mercy of God. Peter asked whether seven times was enough, and Jesus answered with a number that means stop counting. Let that arithmetic govern your home this week.
