Gathered, Not Scattered

A Devotion to Begin the Week
The story of Babel begins with a people determined to make a name for themselves, and it ends with their words confused and their city abandoned. Scripture is honest about what self-trust builds: towers that reach for heaven and communities that cannot hold together. Our children begin their fall journey this week at that unfinished tower, while the Gospel appointed for Sunday shows us the opposite miracle. Jesus promises that where two or three are gathered in his name, he himself is there among them. The difference between Babel and the Church is not the size of the crowd but the name in which it gathers. A household that prays together, even briefly and imperfectly, is already such a gathering. This week, let the kitchen table become a small nave. Read the portions aloud when you can, let the questions be answered by the youngest voice first, and do not worry when a day is missed; mercy governs this practice, not scorekeeping. The Lord who scattered the proud at Babel delights to gather the humble, in living rooms and minivans as surely as in the parish church.
