The Cornerstone
OCTOBER 4 TO 10, 2026 · PROPER 22
“The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” Matthew 21:42
A Devotion to Begin the Week
Isaiah sings of a vineyard planted with every care that yielded only wild grapes, and Jesus takes up the song with an edge. Tenants entrusted with the vineyard beat the servants sent to them, until at last the owner sends his son, saying, they will respect my son. They do not. The parable would end in plain tragedy were it not for the psalm Jesus quotes over it: the stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. Here is the deep grammar of the Gospel. What we refuse, God uses; whom we cast out, God enthrones. The crucified one is not a casualty of history but the foundation on which everything solid now rests. A cornerstone does its work invisibly, squaring every wall against itself, and a life is built the same way. Households set their corner in a hundred small decisions: what gets scheduled first, what gets sacrificed when time runs short, whose voice settles a dispute. This week the readings invite an honest survey of the building. Test the walls of your days against Christ the cornerstone, and where something has drifted out of square, be glad; a foundation that true can bear the weight of every correction.
